Kirkwall is a 20 minute drive across the Churchill Barriers. You can visit sandy beaches and the Italian Chapel before you get to the Orkney mainland.
There is plenty to visit including a creative trail and distilleries, both whisky and gin. The West Mainland is a UNESCO World Heritage site with Skara Brae, a 5,000 year old Stone Age settlement, as well as the Ring of Brodgar, a stone circle.
